Blue lights unite for Autism Awareness month

Blue lights illuminated city buildings across Hampton Roads on Wednesday Apr 2, uniting them in their support of Autism Awareness Day.

The Light It Up Blue campaign by Autism Speaks reached worldwide awareness this year with thousands of cities across the world splashing their cities’ buildings in blue lights to support awareness for autism.

The campaign is an ongoing initiative by the Autism Speaks organization, which has become the nationally recognized hub, since its founding in 2005, to bring attention to a month-long campaign of autism awareness during April.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a broad term for a wide range of complex disorders that affect brain development and impact social and verbal behaviors, motor coordination and physical health.  According to the U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention, autism affects about 1 in 68 children.

The month of April is dedicated not only to those living with it,  but to bringing awareness to the public, who often do not recognize the varying degrees of autism that exist, nor the accomplishments that can be made despite it.
